The Quillverse Knowledge Engine
Where Play IS Research β Obsidian, Zotero, and the Fiction-Fact Membrane
This is a summary. The full paper is available with complete citations.
Overview
The Quillverse Knowledge Engine is an architecture where play IS research. Obsidian, Zotero group libraries, and the rpgcast-xyz platform work together as a single living knowledge organism.
The Core Innovation
A feedback loop between fiction and fact:
- PLAY β MUD exploration, character creation, CrySword sessions
- WONDER β βWhat are mermaids really based on?β βIs labradorite actually from Labrador?β
- QUERY β Real-world research questions emerge from gameplay
- SOURCE β Zotero library provides peer-reviewed citations
- ENRICH β Sourced material flows back into the game world as NPC dialogue, item descriptions, quest hooks
- PLAY β The enriched world generates new questions
This is the TimeKnot β where play and knowledge braid together into something richer than either alone.
The Fiction-Fact Membrane
Every piece of content in the system carries a clear marker:
- Fiction (visionary, speculative, narrative)
- Fact (cited, sourced, peer-reviewed)
- Bridge (fictional element grounded in real-world knowledge)
The membrane ensures intellectual honesty while allowing creative freedom.
Vault Architecture
The knowledge garden is organized as an Obsidian vault following the PARA method (Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives) adapted for the Quillverse:
- ATLAS β Maps of Content, navigation indexes
- CALENDAR β Time-based notes, session logs
- CARDS β Atomic knowledge notes
- EXTRAS β Templates, attachments, exports
- SOURCES β Zotero-synced academic citations
