The TEK8 Learning Lotus

A framework for growing whole humans β€” not just test scores.

TEK8 maps 8 dimensions of human development to a daily learning rhythm called the Crystal Cycle. It aligns with the International Baccalaureate, the SAMHSA wellness model, and regenerative economics β€” while remaining simple enough for a five-year-old to follow.

What Makes It Different

🌱

All 8 Dimensions, Every Day

Most programs focus on academics. TEK8 touches emotional, physical, occupational, environmental, spiritual, social, intellectual, and financial wellness in every session.

No Dimension Dominates

A student deeply engaged in gardening (Earth) is recognized equally to one excelling in mathematics (Order). The system refuses to rank disciplines hierarchically.

🔁

Rhythm, Not Rigidity

The Crystal Cycle is a breathing pattern β€” intention in, gratitude out. Students memorize the mantra and carry the rhythm with them.

The 8 Dimensions

Based on Dr. Peggy Swarbrick's Eight Dimensions of Wellness (SAMHSA, 2006), each mapped to a form of capital from Roland & Landua's regenerative economics.

The Crystal Cycle

A 10-step daily rhythm. Every session follows the same pattern β€” a breathing cycle of intention and gratitude.

Coin · Music · Gather · Craft · Quest · Rest · Play · Map · Yield · Close

The mantra. Memorize it.

1
INSERT COIN Wealth

Set intentions. "What are you investing your attention in today?" Showing up is the first act of wealth.

2
MUSIC BEGINS Ether

Warm-up, emotional check-in, creative activation. Real instruments encouraged. Read the room.

3
GATHER Air

Collect materials, research, explore. Make contact with your subject β€” physically or intellectually.

4
CRAFT Fire

Create, build, refine. Writing, coding, drawing, cooking, composing. Precision under constraint.

5
QUEST Water

The main adventure. Pursue your inquiry. The big swings, the hard questions, the moments requiring empathy.

6
REST Earth

Mandatory pause. Tea, meditation, stepping outside. Rest is not weakness β€” it is the work that makes all other work possible.

7
PLAY Chaos

Pure play with no stakes. Games, sports, riddles. No grades, no assessments. Play is how mammals learn.

8
MAP Order

Reflect and synthesize. "What did you learn today?" Map the day's journey. Find the patterns.

9
YIELD Wealth

Harvest. Rewards, recognition, milestones. Wealth is not what you accumulated β€” it is what flowed through you.

10
CLOSE Ether

Gratitude. One thing grateful for, one thing looking forward to. Screens off. Dice down.

The breathing pattern: The cycle opens with a choice (Coin) and moves through creativity toward empathy (the quest). It returns through rest and play back to gratitude. Intention in, gratitude out. Every daily session is a complete rite of passage β€” separation, liminality, incorporation.

IB Alignment

TEK8 maps 1:1 to the International Baccalaureate across all three programmes. Every petal has a PYP Key Concept, an MYP Subject Group, and a DP Area of Knowledge.

Petal PYP Key Concept MYP Subject DP Area of Knowledge
Ether D12
Form Arts Arts
Air D8
Function Physical and Health Education Natural Sciences
Fire D4
Causation Design Ethics
Water D20
Connection Language Acquisition History
Earth D6
Responsibility Language and Literature Indigenous Knowledge Systems
Chaos D10
Change Individuals and Societies Human Sciences
Order D100
Perspective Sciences Religious Knowledge Systems
Money D2
Reflection Mathematics Mathematics

PYP (Ages 3-12)

8 Key Concepts map 1:1 to petals. The Crystal Cycle IS the approaches to learning. Each concept answers a question: Form (What is it?), Function (How does it work?), Causation (Why?), Connection (How connected?), Change (How changing?), Perspective (What views?), Responsibility (What obligation?), Reflection (How do we know?).

MYP (Ages 11-16)

All 8 MYP subject groups map to petals: Arts, PHE, Design, Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics. The Personal Project is an extended Crystal Cycle.

DP (Ages 16-19)

DP Areas of Knowledge map to petals: Arts, Natural Sciences, Ethics, History, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Human Sciences, Religious Knowledge Systems, Mathematics. Theory of Knowledge spans all eight.

Full alignment tables available in the Scholastic Framework paper.

Use Cases

Afterschool Programs

The Crystal Cycle runs Monday–Thursday, 2:30–7:30 PM. Each 30-minute step maps to one dimension. Students choose their focus petal each week.

Garden clubs, music workshops, esports leagues, outdoor education, STEM labs

Homeschool & Learning Pods

Families use the Crystal Cycle as a daily rhythm. The 10 steps replace rigid scheduling with a repeating pattern students memorize and internalize.

Nature-based learning, project-based inquiry, multi-age groups

Classroom Enrichment

Teachers map existing curriculum to the 8 petals, identifying which dimensions are already covered and which need attention.

IB PYP/MYP alignment, NGSS integration, social-emotional learning

Therapeutic & Residential

The wellness check-in system monitors all 8 dimensions daily. The Crystal Cycle provides structured rhythm for populations that need predictability.

Youth detention alternatives, residential treatment, recovery programs

8 Forms of Capital

Based on Roland & Landua's regenerative economics. Financial capital is ONE of eight β€” not the only one, and not the most important.

Capital Element What It Means
Cultural Ether Stories, songs, traditions, aesthetic knowledge
Natural Air Ecosystems, biodiversity, physical health
Material Fire Tools, buildings, infrastructure, craft
Experiential Water Lived knowledge, embodied wisdom, empathy
Spiritual Earth Purpose, meaning, connection to the sacred
Social Chaos Relationships, trust, community bonds
Intellectual Order Ideas, patterns, systems thinking
Financial Wealth Currency, resources, economic capacity

The Game Layer

TEK8 uses tabletop RPG dice as a measurement and engagement tool β€” not because learning is a game, but because dice create a system where no dimension dominates.

Attainment: Roll / Maximum

Each dimension uses a different die β€” from a 4-sided die (Fire/Craft) to a 100-sided die (Order/Intelligence). Growth is measured as a percentage of your die's maximum:

D4
3/4 = 75%
D20
15/20 = 75%
D100
75/100 = 75%

All three are equal. A student deeply engaged in gardening achieves the same recognition as one pursuing mathematics. The system measures growth against the self, not against others.

This is the principle of polyculture: every form of knowledge has equal value. The lotus needs all eight petals.

Philosophical Foundation

"The senses are higher than matter. The mind is higher than the senses. Intelligence is higher than the mind. And the soul is higher than intelligence."

β€” Bhagavad Gita 3.42

The educational implication: start with sensory experience (hands-on, embodied, tactile), allow the mind to organize what the senses discover, cultivate intelligence (the ability to see patterns), and watch wealth (abundance, fulfillment, capacity) emerge naturally.

5 Senses Mind Intelligence Wealth

TEK8 Works Everywhere Learning Happens

The same 8-petal framework adapts to radically different contexts because it maps universal dimensions of human development β€” not a specific curriculum or institution.

Garden-Based Education

A single garden session activates all 8 petals β€” soil science (Earth), harvesting protocols (Air), cooking (Fire), seed economics (Wealth), soundscapes (Ether), journey to gathering sites (Water), strategy games (Chaos), and data collection (Order).
